Chapter 6

Eden

The next morning, I woke up early, emotionally drained after that horrible date with Kyle and the conversation that followed with Brett. I couldn’t stop tossing and turning in my bed all night. I got up and headed to the restroom. Leaning over the sink, I splashed water on my face and stared at myself in the mirror. My eyes were puffy from crying, but that would go away once I got moving.

I sucked in a breath and slowly let it out while I dwelled on what Brett said last night. He wanted me to look for a different job, to put my degree to use. If he didn’t want me around, it was probably for the best. I’d been thinking about getting another job, anyway, but that didn’t mean I wanted to leave. I loved the kids. Loved working for Brett. I hated for that to end, but I’d always known it couldn’t last forever. The thought of not seeing them anymore brought tears to my eyes, and I quickly wiped them away, refusing to let this defeat me. Life was full of changes and transitions, and it would be hard at first, but I would survive. I worried about the kids, though. They’d grown attached to me, and I didn’t want them to suffer.

I returned to my bed and covered my eyes with my arm. I was all mixed up over this. It upset me that he pushed me away, but on the other hand, he admitted to having feelings for me, and that was reason for some optimism.

It was crazy to allow myself that inkling of hope, but I couldn’t help it. Just thinking about the moment our lips connected sent warmth throughout my entire body. He’d responded like a man who knew what he wanted, and he had definitely wanted me. True, the age difference concerned him, but maybe he would eventually get over it. I didn’t know how this would play out, but I hoped he would be willing to have another discussion about it.

I took a shower and then ventured into the kitchen to make pancakes and sausage for the family. Not long after I started, Helen joined me, and I filled her in on the date with Kyle and the conversation I’d had with Brett afterward.

She stood next to the counter with a cup of coffee in her hand. “I’m sorry about your date. I feel responsible since I was the one who encouraged you to go.”

“It’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known he would turn out to be a loser.”

She pressed her lips together grimly and shook her head. “I’m thinking I should step back and not give advice anymore.”

“Oh, don’t do that, Helen. I value your input, and it’s water under the bridge now. At least something good came out of it. Brett admitted his feelings for me.”

A worry line formed on her forehead. “But he said you can’t be together. That man is so stubborn sometimes.”

I flipped a pancake and then placed another on a plate.
